Each issue of Spoonie focuses on a different chronic illness—sharing background information, practical strategy resources and personal stories/interviews. The name Spoonie references Christine Miserandino’s Spoon Theory—a way to illustrate the energy limitations that can result from living with a chronic illness. Due to the more serious subject matter, it was important that the branding feel friendly and approachable. Medical photography can be intimidating, so I opted for an illustrated cover.
I created this issue about Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Purple dotted lines appear throughout the issue to symbolize eosinophils, a type of white blood cell associated with the disorder.
